By 1954, Christiansen's son, Godtfred, had become the junior managing director of the Lego Group.[16] It was his conversation with an overseas buyer that led to the idea of a toy system. Godtfred saw the immense potential in Lego bricks to become a system for creative play, but the bricks still had some problems from a technical standpoint: their locking ability was limited and they were not versatile.
The capabilities of the Mindstorms range have now been harnessed for use in Iko Creative Prosthetic System, a prosthetic limbs system designed for children. Designs for these Lego prosthetics allow everything from mechanical diggers to laser-firing spaceships to be screwed on to the end of a child's limb. Iko is the work of the Chicago-based Colombian designer Carlos Arturo Torres, and is a modular system that allows children to customise their own prosthetics with the ease of clicking together plastic bricks.

LEGO had been going from strength to strength as a brand, but by 2004 the company’s finances were not looking too great. From 1999 to 2003, LEGO was in trouble, even going so far as to sell some kits at a loss because of costing, fabrication, and management issues. The company had lost direction, retired too many classic LEGO designers, and was heading for bankruptcy fast. The turnaround happened in 2004 when Jorgen Vig Knudstorp took over as CEO. Jorgen made the genius decision to recruit designers from the army of hardcore adult LEGO fans.
